Holds Breath for Slednecks

Slednecks

Increasingly we see shows being introduced that highlight my state, Alaska. Its a profitable business for television I’m sure. From executives point of view we should feel fortunate for any opportunity at all. With each release there is a sigh.  MTV has decided to approach a decidedly lighter side of Alaska with “SLEDNECKS“. The show will be premiering on October 30th.

In the first 10 seconds of the trailer they show you:

  • mountains
  • glaciers
  • boats on the water
  • bears
  • snowmobiles
  • 4 wheelers
  • partying on the water
  • moose

All of those things are present in Alaska.  My problem is they lead with that imagery because that’s what people think that Alaska is all about.  At least what is represented in the trailer are Alaskans that live closer to civilization than we have seen before on television.

What people forget about Alaska because of poor size ratios in school maps is that Alaska is HUGE.  How many times must I have the conversation where there is this grouping of all Alaskans. Have you ever tried to compare somebody from Dallas to someone from Houston?  There is much more that hasn’t been seen on TV about Alaska. Even some stuff that wait for it… doesn’t involve hunting or fishing or living in a cabin.

So I’ll watch Slednecks. I need to know enough about it to defend myself. Invariably the few shows on TV will be the questions I will receive when I travel to the lower 48. Have fun and don’t embarrass us too much Slednecks.
